Nice one man. Please post the lyrics. Am going to read that one to my kids :-)

I'm a big metalhead and Iron Maiden has always been one of my favorites, so I was a little surprised the other day while listening to one of my favorite songs by them which I've heard a hundred times but only just recently analyzed the lyrics. Could it be that these guys are aware of the ice wall? The song is alleged to be about an 1800s explorer who sailed to the north pole to try to find a passageway that would cut through the ice. Him and his crew were never heard of again, their ship believed to have gotten stuck in ice, and to this day no remains of the expedition have been found. The song could just as well be about an expedition to the antarctic ice wall though. I'm not saying Iron Maiden are FE, in all likelihood they probably are not, but these lyrics are suspect lol.

My analysis:
1. "Sometimes things ain't what they seem" - foreshadowing that the expedition will be a failure due to lack of knowledge.
2. "No brave new world" - could be implying that the protagonist was actually looking for more land and/or trying to see what's past the ice in the southern extremities.
3. "Night and day I scan horizon, sea and sky, my spirit wanders endlessly" - this lyric is pretty telling, protagonist is looking out at the horizon, sea, and sky and (possibly) coming to the realization that it is perfectly flat and that the world could be an endless plane.
4. "Hear me calling, rescue me, set me free, lost in this place and leave no trace" - if you're at Antarctica in the mid 1800s and things go wrong, nobody on earth is going to hear your cries or ever find you.
5. "Stranger in a strange land, land of ice and snow, trapped inside this prison, lost and far from home" - again pretty self-explanatory, land of ice and snow (antarctic ice wall), trapped inside this prison (before he dies, protagonist realizes that Antarctica is an ice wall, potentially the edge of the earth which holds the oceans in, and he likens earth to an inescapable "prison").
6. "One hundred years have gone and men again they came that way, to find the answer to the mystery" - the Franklin Expedition, which is the expedition that this song is allegedly about, took place in 1845. Though that expedition was to the north pole, this song could just as easily be referencing the antarctic rim. The 1940s/1950s would be roughly 100 years after the expedition mentioned in this song, and that would also be around the same time that Admiral Byrd was conducting his expeditions in Antarctica (Operation High Jump, Operation Deep Freeze) to "find the answer to the mystery" as the lyric says. Then of course before the 1950s were over, the Antarctic Treaty was formed, forever thereafter banning independent private exploration of the southern extremities.

Probably not enough evidence to call this a full-blown FE song, but I think this is one of those subtle ones. A hugely known metal band giving clues (whether purposely or inadvertently) in a song that millions of fans hear but probably don't understand...truth in plain sight sort of thing.

Anyway, check it out, if nothing else it is one of the best classic metal tunes ever written!!!

Very nostalgic video for me too, the movie 'Hackers' influenced my teenage years and was the catalyst for me to get into all things 'hacking' - I really miss the days of phreaking and discovering new ways to exploit the payphone and early internet.
